Mrs. Elliott's Montessori Classroom

Today we had a lesson on using Canva.  Yesterday the students wrote some poems and they are using Canva to publish their good copy. Tomorrow we will be pumpkin painting.  Please bring costumes in a bag to change into in the afternoon.  For those attending the intermediate dance in the afternoon, please bring a food donation for the Food Bank.  There will be a concession, $5 maximum please. Today we had some very excited children as we went to the Book Fair in the Library.  Our purchasing day is Thursday morning.  It is also open after school and at lunch for those with money.  We did some writing this morning and the students had to create their perfect Halloween.  I asked them to focus on details like the setting, costumes, atmosphere and the activities that would be involved. Today we had a big work block.  We talked about using our time wisely in the classroom and how that can lead to a more productive work time.  The children are all bringing home new word study words this week.  They voted and chose to have their dictation on Thursday instead of Friday this week due to Halloween.  This afternoon we helped our little buddies make torn tissue ghosts.  As we are entering spooky season, we started learning/reviewing the song C'est L'halloween.   Homework tonight:  - home reading  - word study (package due if not complete)  - 5/6 French colour by number if not complete  - email from Mrs. Elliott Have a great evening!   

This afternoon we looked at Cell Theory and the scientists behind it.  We also spent a good deal of time this morning getting our totes and materials organized.  This took more time for some than others.   Homework tonight:  - home reading  - word study practice  - gym tomorrow  - library books due tomorrow  - working with permanent paint tomorrow (don't wear your best clothes) 

 Today we had a wonderful time at the Art Gallery looking at the work of Inuit artist Kenojuak Ashevak.  The children all created a print (or two or three) to bring home with them.  They are also bringing home their gratitude pumpkins today.   Homework this weekend:  - home reading  Have a wonderful weekend! 

 Today we worked on our gratitude writing rough copy.  When we painted pumpkins last week to share gratitude, we are now saying why this was an important image to us.  We watched a couple videos on Kenojuak Ashevak who is the artist we will be looking at tomorrow on our field trip to the Art Gallery.  We did our first Fast Facts today!  The students had five minutes to answer as many questions as they could for the two times tables.  This afternoon we painted gratitude pumpkins.  Each student was asked what they were grateful for and to represent this on a pumpkin.  We will be doing writing to accompany this next week.  Today we logged into our Prodigy accounts for the first time.  This is a math website that children can access from home as well.  The grade fours worked on their FSAs again today.  The fives and sixes worked on focusing their writing with a main idea and supporting details. Today we did our first Perplexor!  This is a math word puzzle that the children need to solve using clues given in the story.  This afternoon we also worked on goal setting.  Please ask your child about the goals they set.  October already!  Today we started our Typing Pal program.  This helps the students learn to type properly using home row.  The students were very excited as they had double gym blocks today.  I will be away tomorrow, so there will be no blog update tomorrow.
